Meet The All New Phison PS5028-E28 PCIe 5.0 SSD Controller

A Reference Model Appears!

We heard about Phison’s new PS5028-E28 controller at CES this year, but until now all we’ve had to go on were internal benchmarks; not our favourite way to judge performance.  This has now changed as several sites, including The FPS Review, were given the chance to try out a reference model SSD based on the new controller, paired with KIOXIA BiCS8 218-layer TLC 3D NAND Flash.  We won’t get any details on pricing or availability from this review as this particular SSD model will never hit the market but we now can look at the performance the PS5028-E28 will offer.

Once released you will see 1TB, 2TB and 4TB drives using the Phison PS5028-E28; the 1TB is rated for 14900MB/s sequential read, 13500MB/s sequential writes and 1300K IOPS random read, 2800K IOPS random write.  That is the slower version, both the 2TB and 4TB models are rated for 14900MB/s, 14000MB/s sequential; 2500K and 3000K IOPS random.  Those however, are the marketing numbers , while The FPS Review offers actual results.

Those results show that not only does the drive produce the advertised rates, it’s essentially the fastest drive they have tested … at everything!  That’s without extra cooling by the way, add a motherboard heatsink and possibly a fan and this drive will maintain that bandwidth even in tough thermal conditions.
